It’s early morning and still dark. I’m into mile two of an early morning run. The moon is full and bright and I can see the fields and trees in twilight, the farmhouses and cottages mostly show no signs of life, except perhaps one glowing light as someone prepares for their day. I can smell the damp of the morning dew, and take great pleasure in breathing the cool clean crisp air as I steadily draw breath. The cool temperature is pleasant to run in and allows me to keep a better pace. Soon the sky is turning orange, and pink as the sun peaks on the horizon. My eyes relax as the road in front of me and all my surroundings become more visable. I take in the glory of the morning sky, and the country landscape that the rising sun illuminates. I feel privileged to be a witness. I have an overwhelming primal feeling, nothing to think about only the present, the here and now. My breath, my footsteps, and my senses alive. I love to run. ----------- Or after work, the drive home, making dinners, getting the homeworks done and kids to bed I head out for a late evening run. It’s dark, cool and my eyes try to adjust as I head into the country roads where streets lights are non existent and the moon acts as my light. My days work and all or any stresses seem to disolve as I get my pace. Four miles through the country roads, then like a new run I’m at the coast line, and a total change of surroundings, smells and sights. I love my runs. I breathe in full draws of fresh clean cool air, which I love. I love to feel my lungs draw in clean air. You see I used to be a smoker. I had smoked for 15 years. I was 32 pounds overweight. Then one day…I had had enough. I simply stopped smoking, and started running, just to try to get a bit fitter though. I never fancied the idea of running, it was never for me. Years ago, before I started smoking I enjoyed cycling and rock climbing, but would not have entertained the idea of running. Anyway, I thought to run a mile would be a good start. I had to keep stopping and walking, it felt like i could take a heart attack because I was gasping so hard for breath, but I tryed again the next day, and the next, and the next untill about two weeks in i did it without stopping! I felt like I had climbed Everest, it was so liberating. I felt like I could do anything, I was truly hooked. I worked on doing that mile faster. the first time without stopping was 12 minutes. Within a month I had it down to eight and a half! Then one day I decided to go further and done a 3 miles. After three of these runs I done the 3 miles without stopping. then 4, then after another few weeks 7 miles. Over a period of about 8 months I worked on getting my speed up and currently do 7 miles in 58 minutes which I believe to be great progress. I also lost the 32 pounds from hard work and better eating habits. I have also done a 12.5 mile run, and I took a notion one Saturday and endured to do 21 miles! I was so pleased with my time of 2 Hrs, and 58 minutes. I plan to do the Belfast marathon on bank holiday Monday the 4th May 2009. it is the 27th of March now. I am kind of worried about it, getting injured before, forgetting my Ipod or something silly. But, I also cannot wait, I’m very excited. I get such a buzz everytime I beat a personal record/best. So for me, to do the marathon, and finish, will be such an acomplishment. This is how I became a runner.

How I became a runner.
